The Teachers

Ms Shagufta Shahin  of Gulliana and Luton. A teacher by profession, Shagufta is now a senior manager in the field of education. After nearly ten years at Barnfield College in Luton, she has been promoted to a senior management role at a college in London. Shagufta has strong family links with Takkal.

Master Sajid Mahmood of Morrah Hafyal and Huddersfield.

Master Sajid Mahmood is the son of Choudhry Khalid Mahmood (Marhoom) of Morrah Hafyal. He has taught in several secondary schools in the Bewal area for nearly twenty years. He is also an experienced journalist who takes a deep interest in the affairs of the Pothwar region. Master Sajid left his teaching job at Govt High School Smot in February 2008 when he moved to England.

Master Jehangir Afzal Hashmi of Suin Hafizan.

Master Jehangir is a truly amazing personality of Bewal. Apart from being a senior teacher at Choha High School, he is a high calibre journalist and poet. He often investigates and writes about everyday problems / issues of the Bewal area that others dare not touch. Thousands of people read his news articles from the Bewal area on Pothwar.com every week.

Saeed Asghar of Morrah Hafyal and Huddersfield

Saeed is the son of Choudhry Ali Asghar of Morrah Hafyal. He teaches ICT in a secondary school in Huddersfield.

Rizwan Hussain of Dhera Kanyal and Plumstead, SE London.

Rizwan is an economics graduate from Queen Mary University, London. He has done a PGCE and is now a primary school teacher in South East London.

Javed Khaliq of Mankra and Luton, Bedfordshire.

Javed has an MSc in computer science as well as a PGCE. He is a teacher of ICT in a secondary school in Slough, Berkshire.

Azhar Hussain of Qazian and Slough, Berkshire.

Azhar is a teacher of Mathematics in Slough and Eton Secondary School in Slough, Berkshire.

Mrs Saima Hussain of Dhera Kanyal and Plumstead, London.

Saima graduated with a honours degree in computer science. She went on to do a PGCE and now works as a primary school teacher in SE London.

Mrs Faisal Iqbal of Dhera Kanyal and Lye Cross.

Mrs Faisal Iqbal is a primary school teacher in the West Midlands.

Mrs Shazia Mehmood Kiyani of Luton and Chahangi (UC Thathi). 

Daughter of Abdul Rashid Kiyani, Shazia is a primary school teacher in Luton. She is a graduate of the University of Bedfordshire.

Zahid Hussain of Morrah Hafyal and Luton, Bedfordshire.

Zahid is an English teacher and presently works in Saudi Arabia. He is the son of Haji Rehmat Hussain of Morrah Hafyal, a former teacher at Bewal Primary School.

Headmaster (retired) Khadam Hussain of Morrah Hafyal

Headmaster Khadam Hussain is the man who will go down in history for being the driving force behind the incredible new building of Bewal Primary School.     

Headmaster (retired) Ghulam Murtaza  A highly respected veteran educator who has worked tirelessly for the betterment of education in the Bewal region. He has served as a headmaster at high schools in Changa, Deryala and Bewal.

Mrs Lubna Jameel of Bewal and Peterborough. Lubna has a Masters degree in education (M.Ed) and taught for several years in both private and government schools in Bewal. She now lives in the UK with her family.

 

The Doctors

Dr Muhammad Shoaib of Dhera Kanyal

Dr Shoaib is a highly respected doctor with decades of experience in the field of medicine. A graduate of King Edward Medical College, Lahore, he has studied acupuncture in China. He is presently serving in the Federal Govt Services Hospital in Islamabad formerly known as the 'Polyclinic'. He is a humble and pious man who is actively involved in Islamic dawah. He manages a highly reputed 'dars' in Bewal.

 

Dr Atique of Dhera Kanyal and Birmingham

A consultant surgeon at a leading hospital in Birmingham, UK, Dr Atique is the chairman of the Abdur Rahman Memorial Trust.  He has shown great vision and leadership in the setting up of the Bewal International Hospital. Dr Atique belongs to an influential family of Dhera Kanyal; he is the cousin of Ch. Javed Kausar advocate.

 

Dr Irfan Dad of Dhera Kanyal and Glasgow, Scotland.

From a prominent family of Dhera Kanyal, Dr Irfan has a highly successful dental practice in Glasgow. He is the brother in law of the first Muslim Member of Parliament in Britain, Mohammad Sarwar MP. Dr Irfan's wife is also a dentist.

 

Dr Faheem Hassan of Sar Sooba Shah and Yorkshire, England.

Dr Faheem is the son of Haji Maqsood of Sar Sooba Shah. A graduate of RMC, Dr Faheem now lives and works in the north of England. His wife is also an MBBS doctor.

 

Dr Sangeeta Bevli of Delhi and California.

Dr Sangeeta is one of the many distinguished daughters of Bewal whose parents were forced out of Bewal in 1947. The daughter of Gurcharan Singh Bevli, she is presently working in California, USA.

 

Dr Asif Naveed of Dheri and London.

Dr Asif is the son of Haji Ashiq Hussain (Marhoom). A graduate of RMC, he now lives and works in London, UK. He is an A&E specialist and works in a large hospital in Surrey.

 

Dr Tanvir Ahmed Raja of Morrah Hafyal.

Dr Tanvir is the son of Major Shabbir Ahmed Raja of Morrah Hafyal, Bewal. A graduate of RMC, he now works at Rawalpindi General Hospital. Dr Tanvir has also served as a Medical Officer at Hearts International Hospital in Rawalpindi and as a Dr Instructor at IIMC, Rawalpindi. Often giving free consultations and assisting patients at RGH generally, Dr Tanvir is now well known amongst the Bewal community.

 

Dr Nadeem Khalid of Dhera Kanyal and Lye Cross, UK.

Dr Nadeem is the son of Haji Muhammad Khalid of Dhera Kanyal. He studied at King Edward Sixth Form College in the West Midlands (UK) before going on to study medicine at the world famous University of Dundee, Scotland. He now lives and works in the West Midlands.

 

Dr Shaukat Awan of  Bewal and Pindi Gheb

Between 1994 and 2002, Dr Shaukat worked in various rural hospitals in and around Bewal (Bewal, Smot, Sar Soobah Shah, Thathi, Bhadana, Devi Data) as well as maintaining a private clinic providing homeopathic remedies. Cheap and cheerful, he quickly became the most popular doctor in Bewal.

Dr Shaukat is originally from village Ikhlaas in tehsil Pindi Gheb, district Attock. Since 1994 he has made Bewal his home. In 2002, he moved to England. He now lives in Bedfordshire and works as a pharmacy technician at L&D hospital in Luton whilst pursuing higher studies.

 

Dr Khaliq-ur-Rehman of Dhera Kanyal and Lye Cross

Dr Khaliq is a dentist and practices in the West Midlands. He is the brother of Dr Atiq-ur-Rehman and also a member of the Executive Committee of the Bewal International Hospital.

 

Dr Saeeda Ahmed of Morrah Hafyal and Liverpool.

Dr Saeeda is the daughter of Major Shabbir Ahmed Raja of Morrah Hafyal, Bewal. She has an MBBS from RMC and now lives in the UK with her husband, Dr Javed Iqbal, who is an orthopaedic surgeon. A graduate of King Edward College, Lahore, Dr Javed is also a Hafiz-e-Quran.

 

Dr Faizania Ahmed of Morrah Hafyal.

Dr Faizania is also the daughter of Major Shabbir Ahmed Raja of Morrah Hafyal, Bewal. She did her MBBS at RMC. Dr Faizania is married and lives in Rawalpindi. Her husband is doing a Ph.D in Pharmacy and works as research officer in NUST, Rawalpindi.

 

Dr Saeed Hussain of Dhera Kanyal

Saeed is studying medicine at the University of Cambridge, UK. He is the son of Muhammad Naeem of Dhera Kanyal, Bewal.

 

Dr Israar Malik of Samot

A graduate of Dundee University, Scotland, Dr Israar is believed to be the first person of the Bewal region to qualify as a doctor in the UK. He now works as a GP in Bradford. His wife is also a doctor.

 

Dr Muhammad Sajid of Samot

A graduate of Dundee University, Scotland, Dr Sajid now works as a GP in the West Midlands. He lives in Lye Cross.

 

Dr Nadeem Safdar of Dhera Kanyal

A maxillofacial surgeon, Dr Nadeem works in the world famous Harley Street, London. He is believed to be the first person from the Bewal region to graduate from the University of Cambridge, UK.

The Ph.D's of  the Bewal Region

Dr Gurmohanjeet Singh Bevli of Delhi and California.

The son of Colonel Manmohan Singh Bevli, Dr Gurmohanjeet is one of the many distinguished sons of Bewal. He has a Ph.D in physics and is working as a lecturer in a university in California. After being forced to leave Bewal during The Great Fire of Bewal in 1947, the family set up their new home in Delhi. Despite the tragic circumstances of the families departure from Bewal, Dr Gurmohan is very proud of his Bewali roots. His entire family now uses "Bevli" as their family name.

Dr Khalid Malik Ph.D of Dheri and London.

Dr Khalid is a scientist and leading academic in the UK. He has taught chemistry at the University of Bradford for several years. He is now working for a multi-national firm in Reading, UK. He is the son of Malik Masood (Marhoom) of Dheri.

Professor Dr Rehana Karim Ph.D of Dhera Kanyal and Manchester.

Dr Rehana is the daughter of Choudhry Fazal Karim. She did her Ph.D in chemistry from the University of Loughborough, England, and is a university lecturer in England. Dr Rehana has spent several years teaching at the prestigious University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Dr Samina Rashid Ph.D of Chahangi (union council Thathi) and Luton.

Dr Samina is the daughter of Raja Muhammad Azad of Chahangi. She did her Ph.D in chemistry and spent several years teaching in prestigious Bedfordshire schools. She now manages a successful franchise of an international tuition centre chain in Luton.

The Politicians

Choudhry Muhammad Nawaz, Nazim of Bewal.

The veteran politician of Dhera Kanyal, Bewal, will go down in history as the man who delivered mainline gas supply to Bewal. Though Bewal is still waiting for the connection . . . !

 

Choudhry Ghulam Murtaza of Thathi

Choudhry Ghulam Murtaza is the current Nazim of union council Thathi. He has had a long career in banking and served as the manager of the UBL branch in Jabbar for many years. He is a cousin of Choudhry Azeem, the Nazim of tehsil Gujar Khan.

 

 

Babu Ali Akbar  (Marhoom) of Dhok Bangial, Choha Khalsa

Babu Alik Akbar was a respected veteran Muslim League politician of Choha Khalsa. For decades he worked tirelessly for the welfare and development of the Choha area. Sadly, Babu Ali Akbar passed away on the 18th of February 2008. May Allah bless his soul.

Muhammad Zubairi of Bewal Shehr and Wembley, West London.

Muhammad Zubairi has an accountancy firm in West London. He has been running the highly successful firm for over 20 years. Mr Zubairi is also a leading human rights activist with a special interest in the Middle East.

AbdulRahman of Manjotha

AbdulRahman has worked in accountancy for various multinational companies including Mars Confectionary in Slough. He now lives in Leicestershire. AbdulRahman takes an active interest in the affairs of the Muslim community.

Muhammad Nassir of Palhot (Qazian) and Batley.

Son of Muhammad Zahoor, Nassir is an extraordinary young man with a high flying career in the city. He is a qualified chartered accountant who is presently working for the world famous Ernest & Young.

 

 

The Businessmen and Women

Sir Anwar Parvez of Thathi and West London, UK

Sir Anwar is the owner of the Bestway chain of wholesale 'cash and carries' in the UK. The group has also made major investments in the UK in sectors other than retail and is an important player in the cement business in Pakistan.

Haji Aurangzeb and Sons of Morrah Bhottian and Birmingham, UK.

Haji Aurangzeb and sons own the major food retailer Alamgeer Foods in Birmingham as well as Adil Trading Company in Jabbar, a renowned exporter of spices and pickles.

Ch. Mehboob Hussain and Brothers of Morrah Hafyal and Bradford, UK

The famous curry chain 'Nawab Restaurants' is owned and run by Mehboob Hussain and brothers of Morrah Hafyal, Bewal. They have highly successful branches in Bradford and Manchester as well as in the holiday resorts of southern Spain.

Mr Nasir Javed of Qazian and California, USA.

Nasir Javed is the CEO and President of Princeton Technology Inc. in California. An engineer and enterprenuer, Nasir has been leading this hi-tech electronics manufacturing company in California since 1989.

The Military Men and Women

Admiral (retired) Abdulaziz Mirza of Malhi, Choha Khalsa

Former Chief of Staff of the Pakistan Navy and former ambassador of Pakistan to Saudi Arabia. Belonging to an influential family of Choha, Admiral Mirza has the credit of establishing the only Bahria Foundation School and College located in a rural location. All the other schools and colleges of the Bahria Foundation are located in prime locations  in towns and cities. The Choha Khalsa Bahria School is located on the Choha – Takal Road and has proved to be a tremendous educational asset for the area.

 

Lt General (retired) Arshad Mahmood of Kasur and Choha Khalsa

General Arshad is the Vice Chancellor of one of Pakistan's biggest and oldest universities, The University of Punjab, Lahore. Although General Arshad is settled in Kasur (where his family owns a large amount of agricultural land), his roots lie in Morrah Nangrial, UC Choha Khalsa where he attended school. His family has a long history of distinguished military service; he is the son of Captain Sajawal (marhoom) and the grandson of Subedar Madad Khan (marhoom), both of Morrah Nangrial. General Arshad belongs to the Butt 'baraderi' and maintains ties with his extended family in Choha Khalsa. He has donated some prime land for a much needed extension to the masjid in his home village.

 

Major General (retired) Pawanjit Singh Bevli of Delhi

Major General P.S. Bevli had a distinguished career in the Indian Army. His family lived in Bewal for generations until they were forced to leave by the tragic events of 1947. Now living in Delhi, General Bevli takes great pride in his Bewali roots and his entire family now uses "Bevli" as their surname.

 

General (retired) Avtar Singh of Chandigarh, Punjab, India

General Avtar Singh was born in Bewal where he lived with his family until they were forced out by the riots of 1947. After leaving Bewal, General Avtar went on to join the Indian Army where he had a very distinguished career.

General Avtar Singh's house still stands next to the Girls High School in Bewal. It is now used as the office of the Nazim of Bewal.

 

Brigadier (retired) Mazhar-ul-Haq of Morrah Heerahn (U.C. Changa Bangial)

Brigadier (retired) Shafiq of Changa Bangial

Brigadier Shafiq has recently retired from military service. If you can tell us more about the current activities of this distinguished personality of our area, please email us.

Brigadier Muhammad Akram (Marhoom) of Maira Shams

Brigadier Akram had a distinguished career in the Army and later served as a Member of the Provincial Punjab Assembly (MPA). Amongst other  things, he is widely credited for building the first tarmac road from Gujar Khan to Bewal.

Colonel (retired) Shabbir Ahmed of Sambal Smot

Following a distinguished career as an Artillery officer in Pakistan Army, Colonel Shabbir entered the field of politics. Known for his skills in public speaking, he was successfully elected a PPP Member (MPA) to the Punjab Provincial Assembly.

 

Captain Haseeb Sultan of Takkal

Captain Haseeb is the son of Shaheed PAF pilot Sultan Mehmood and is one of the brightest stars of Bewal. He is not only a fine Army officer but also a Hafiz-e-Quran. Bewal.Net salutes him!

Major (retired) Shabbir Ahmed Raja of Morrah Hafyal

Major Shabbir has an MA in Political Science and is now working as a projects manager for a major telecommunications company in Islamabad. He has four children, three of whom are MBBS doctors. He is the son of Haji Rehmat Hussain.

 

Corporal Ater Pervaiz of Dhera Kanyal and Brierley Hill, UK.

Ater is the son of Ch. Tariq Parvez and works in the legal profession in England. He has a passion for the military and is an active member of the British Territorial Army (TA). Holding the rank of corporal, he is a Military Policeman and has been on training and military exercises to various parts of Britain and Europe.

 

Colonel Doctor (retired) Aziz  of Dhera Kanyal

Dr Colonel Aziz retired from the AMC many years ago. He now lives and works in Islamabad.

 

Colonel (retired) Manmohan Singh Bevli of Delhi.

Colonel Manmohan Singh lived in the centre of Bewal Shehr until 1947 when he was about ten years old (near the present Govt High School for Boys). During The Great Fire of Bewal, the family was forced out of the area. They moved to India and started a new life in Delhi. Manmohan Singh went on to join the Indian Army where he had a distinguished career.

By adopting "Bevli" as his family name, Colonel Manmohan is responsible for making Bewal known to thousands of people throughout India!

Sayeeda Warsi is solicitor by training and ran a highly successful law firm in Leeds, UK, before entering politics full time.

Barrister Sheikh Abid Mahmood of Birmingham and Bewal

Barrister Abid Mahmood is a leading immigration and human rights lawyer in the UK. He is a part time Immigration Appeals Judge and is one of the few specialist lawyers in the UK who are on the UK Attorney General's list of "special advocates" dealing with terrorism cases.

He is the son of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah of Bewal and maintains strong ties with Bewal.

Sheikh Safdar Mahmood LLB of Bewal Shehr and Birmingham UK

Safdar is a practising solicitor in the UK and has been working in the legal profession for over 12 years now. He presently works for the Birmingham City Council. He is the son of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah of Bewal and the younger brother of barrister Abid Mahmood.

Aurangzeb Khaliq JP of Kangar and Rotheram

Aurangzeb Khaliq is serving as an appointed Magistrate (JP) in South Yorkshire, England. He is an active member of the Pakistani community in his home town of Rotheram and also serves as a school governor. He is presently writing a historical book about like in Kangar, a village in union council Thathi.

Muhammad Ashraf Hashmi Advocate of Suin Hafizan, Bewal.

Advocate Ashraf practices in Haripur.

Habib Malik of Pehr Haali (UC Choha Khalsa) and Glasgow, Scotland.

Habib Malik is the head of fundraising in Scotland for the global charity organisation, Islamic Relief. He has been working in charity work for many years and been to many disaster zones around the world to help the desperate and needy. He was in Lebanon after the month long war (Israeli bombardment) in summer 2006 and in Bangladesh in November 2007 following a cyclone and flood which left thousands homeless.

Bewal.Net salutes Habib for not only doing such splendid charity work himself but also for inspiring so many others to do the same.

 

Ch. Muhammad Zafran of Dhera Kanyal

Zafran is a graduate from the University of Punjab and has a Post Grad Diploma in computer science from the Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad. Zafran has done a considerable amount of research for the website, Bewal.Net.

 

Muhammad Nadeem Siaam of Morrah Hafyal

Muhammad Nadeem Siaam is a young Pothwari poet from Morrah Hafyal, Bewal. He has written several volumes of poetry about life in Pothwar and other topics. He is a regular contributer to Bewal.Net

 

Ch. Munir of Morrah Hafyal and Heckmond Wyke, Yorkshire.

Ch. Munir is an active social worker in his local community. He has been an active supporter of the Savayra Foundation.

 

Chief Inspector Arshad Kiyani of Morrah Hafyal (Punjab Police). He is one of the most senior serving police officers of the Bewal area.

 

Hamed Junaid s/o of Dr Shoaib of Dhera Kanyal

Hamed has done a Masters degree in Computer Science from the University of Central England (UCE), UK. He is presently working in Islamabad on a World Bank project.

 

Thekedar Mohabbat Hussain of Morrah Hafyal

Thekedar Haji Mohabbat Hussain is one of the oldest and well known building contractors in Bewal. An architect genius, he is also known for his friendly and warm personality. Many of the most beautiful houses and kothis in Bewal are his creation.

 

Muhammad Shafiq s/o Haji Munsafdar, Dhera Kanyal. An engineering graduate from the UK, Shafiq is the area manager for Siemens, northern Pakistan.

 

Namardar Wali Akhmat (Ahmed) of Bewal Shehr

"Bewal was shared by Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus. We went to school together, we grew up playing together" says Namardar Wali Akhmat who was a teenager in 1947. He is a leading authority on the history of the pre-1947 Bewal (before Pakistan was created). Living in the centre of Bewal, he knew personally many of the Hindus and Sikhs of Bewal and still remembers where the houses of all the influential Hindus and Sikhs were. He has been the first port of call for all the non-Muslims who have visited Bewal over the last several decades to see the town of their parents and grandparents.

 

Amir Waseem, s/o Muhammad Ashfaq of Dhera Kanyal and Lye Cross, UK.

Amir is a real hero. Despite being disabled and wheelchair bound, he has never let that be an obstacle in achieving his goals. He has performed highly in his academic studies and is now a manager in the Inland Revenue (the customs and tax ministry in the UK). Bewal.Net salutes him for providing such a positive role model for young Bewalis everywhere!

 

Choudhry Fakhr Ul-Hassan of Dhera Kanyal and Reditch, UK

Ch. Fakhr is a para-medic by profession and an active community worker in Reditch. He belongs to Dhok Ch. Boota Khan, Dhera Kanyal, Bewal.

 

Ahsan ul-Haq, s/o Muhammad Ishaq of Dhera Kanyal and Lye Cross, UK.

Ahsan is another star Bewal can be immensely proud of.  He did his B.Sc in Islamabad before coming to England to do an M.Sc in Electronic Engineering. He has recently done  the prestigious MBA from Aston University and is now the Managing Director of an American company.

 

PC Afzal of Palhot (Qazian) and Batley

PC Afzal served as a police constable in the Thames Valley Police for 18 years before taking early retirement. During his long service, he worked at Maidenhead police station as well as at several other police stations in Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. He provided a great role model for young Pakistanis in England.

Omar is a bright young man who has worked hard to move ahead in his banking career. He has recently been promoted to the post of Business Manager for Lloyds Bank in Birmingham.

 

Akhtar Hafeez of Bewal

Probably the most popular face of Bewal, the much loved and respected 'khussra' Hafeez was born in Abbotabad. He moved to Bewal over 70 years ago. With no relatives or family in Bewal, Hafeez has used song and dance to win the affection of Bewalis. He knows practically everyone in and around Bewal by their first name and says that "Bewal is my family". He was brought to Bewal by a "khussra" of Pukka Khoo when he was just in the sixth class at school.  He is still incredibly fit for his age!

Raja Tariq Kiyani son of Raja Fazal Ellahi was born on April 1, 1954 in Gujar Khan. A law graduate from Punjab University, he is a businessman who served as Nazim Tehsil Gujar Khan 2001 – 2002. He was elected as MPA for Gujar Khan in the 2002 elections.

The building in the centre of Bewal used by as the union council office. Until the partition of India in 1947, the building and the grounds around it were the home of a famous Bewali, Gokal Singh.
